Twentytwelve
Sunday, January 1, 2012 at 14:35 I'm guessing it's pretty obvious that I don't blog much anymore. Mostly because of this thing eating up all the time I have to spare. But also because of Twitter and Facebook, where it just happens to be quicker and easier to express myself, socially network and share.
Still, for those of you who've stuck around for the duration of the dry spell: Welcome to the Future.
2012 is going to be a pretty exciting year, and I'm not talking about Mayan prophecies. The Secret World will finally be out, ending -- or not ending, but paragraphing -- more than five years of development. We won't be leaving TSW behind, of course, since there's tons more to come after launch, but at least we'll be able to catch our breath and look ahead.
And what's ahead? That's too early to say, but rest assured that I haven't, and will not, leave The Longest Journey and Dreamfall fans in the dark forever. Chapters is going to happen, and hopefully this year you'll know when and how.
There might also be other stuff, but it's only January, so let's pace ourselves.
Around this time, I've usually done my lists of top games and films of the year that's been, and that's in the works. Mostly for my own benefit, to recap and process a bit, but hopefully it'll help some of you discover things you haven't yet.
January the one, then. Twentytwelve. Year of prophecy, change and release.

A response to Manni's comment above:
Do you still honestly believe they're going to finish the TLJ/Dreamfall series? Are you actually still waiting for that? Give it up, dude. It's not going to happen. And even if it did happen, it wouldn't be anything like the games we loved because the gaming industry has changed. It would be a full-fledged fighting game with no non-fighting options for pure adventure gamers like myself. So let it go. Blow out your vigil candles and move on.

Have you read the article before judging his hope ? .OO I think the producer/writer is a better placed person to know if Chapters is going to happen. Or not.
I've been engrossed by the crowdfunding success of Double Fine with their new adventure game project. Any chance Dreamfall Chapters might make use of all the fans out there happy to fund it's development?
In 20 years of playing games on the computer, from commander keen to skyrim, The Longest Journey still takes the number one spot on my list. Pumped to hear there may be another installment soon.
First of all, Happy New Year! Although I entered the site now, it just made my whole year. I cannot tell you all the possible outcomes my mind created for the continuation of Dreamfall because...you probably thought of them all. I am happy that this continuation take soo much time just imagining the stunning graphics the game will have. I got a pretty good pc that's just waiiting!
Good luck with absolutely everything you set your mind to.
Wish you all the best from Romania!
Please, if at all possible, prioritize TLJ's continuation this year. For one thing, even getting TLJ to work on newer computers is a fairly cumbersome task, so a rerelease would be marvelous (maybe on consoles?). Dreamfall is actually in my XBOX (which I had to have refurbed when the motherboard died on me last month) right now, and I just finished it again (still not a big fan of the big guy in the cave or the battle controls). I'd love to see the two released in a collection with a third title. Honestly, I'd love to see ANYTHING from TLJ's universe soon!
Good luck with TSW -- I'm not an MMO gamer, but I still hope it's successful :)
Thanks for this, I really appreciate what you have done here. Keep it up, and I will be back for more.
Please update us on your thoughts about DoubleFine's kickstarter, I'm sure there are several who'd be interested. Maybe it'll get publishers to think about TLJ again.
I am greatly intrigued about Dreamfall continuation. It poses all the questions and offers no resolutions. If not the game, can there at least be a story to read?
though i noticed I'm not that into much gaming lately, growing old or too much work, not sure, once in 1/2 year, I open this journal with a thought if there's still a chance I'm not too old by the time the TLJ/DF story continues. i can see now there is. the storyline and setting never let me go since TLJ. The irony is so many people want this to project to go on they could easily make it happen by throwing in many a little if not for the stupid greedy system nuances with financing, copyrights etc. but we shall overcome im sure :) reality will subside the mass desire for the tale to go on
Best of luck with TSW and i am going to tsw.com to sign up right now
Great - can't wait for more Dreamfall. I hope Zoe is part of it, with the same voice actor.
I cant wait for chapters, since dreamfall is still the best and most beautifull game i've ever played.
Are there any new news about Dreamfall?
I need more Zoe now!
Chapters will be one of very few games I've actually paid for, even if you make it online. Just please make it as good as the first 2 games.
Looking forward to Chapters!!
I say forget chapters and let's have a full blown TLJ/Dreamfall game - the biggest & best ever. After all these years a few chapters don't sound meaty enough anymore. And who knows how long it will take to get the next installment!
Do you ever feel cursed for not finishing the story of April Ryan?
nice to hear such good news about anything related to TLJ , hope we can get something soon
I agree with Shaggy, at least insofar that I hope you will consider making it a full blown game and release it in formats other than a digital download. I'm probably somewhat biased, because my internet never works well, so I'm not the kind of person who plays online and buys games digitally. I'm also rather fond of owning a hardcopy of a game, film or a book. Always have been that way, and always will be. It doesn't matter how many e-reader ads get shoved in my face, or if a game developer ends up going down the road Bioware is, I will not purchase anything digitally, or anything that requires me to be online either once or perpetually to play. It's not because I don't support the series. In fact, I'd probably pay for it but never play it myself. I'd rather watch someone do an LP of it on youtube... And it pains me to think about it, but it's the most likely outcome for me, if this series will indeed be continued.
I finished another playthrough of TLJ today. I lost count how many times I have played it. It runs perfectly on Windows 7, and dare I say, it aged much better than Dreamfall did. I tried replaying Dreamfall a couple of months ago, but I stopped and uninstalled it after the first conversation between Zoe and Reza (I believe that was his name). I did finish it twice, soon after it was released, but had not played it since, unlike its predecessor. The gameplay felt even clumsier than I remembered, and time has not been kind to it. I know that you care about this game as much as any other game you're likely to be involved in creating, so do not take this as an attack, but it is inferior to TLJ even now. If that stills seems like an attack, then I apologise, but I cannot word it any better and still get my point across.
I remain tentatively hopeful about the future of this series in part because of the above, but also for too many reasons to list here, and this comment is probably already much longer than it should have been.
Best wishes in all your endeavours, Ragnar. Perhaps you'll find the time to update this journal again soon. Some of us don't use social networking sites.
