Where are the animators? They're taking a break.

With Brother Bear losing out to such "classy" family entertainment as The Cat in the Hat and The Haunted Mansion, the chances of Disney embarking on another traditionally animated movie are about zilch. In other words, this is the end of an era...and an important art form. Granted, 2D animation lives on in Europe and on TV - and rumours have it that Pixar (!) are planning to produce a non-computer animated movie - but this is Disney we're talking about. Disney, who invented feature-length animation. Disney, the empire built from thirty drawings per second.

Those of you who read my journal regularly know that I've written about this very topic several times before. But now the nails have truly been hammered into the coffin - "taking a break", my ass - and all that's left to do is to mourn the death of Disney...and of big-budget 2D animated movies. Hopefully, this art form will live on through others, and perhaps some day Disney will return home, to the house that Mickey built.  ¶ 14:07
