Just came back from a weekend trip to Warsaw, Poland, and I had a really good time. I attended a Polish wedding (actually a Polish-Norwegian wedding) and learned first-hand that the Poles know how to throw a great party.
And, oh, I saw George W. Bush.
It's sort of disturbing to travel to Poland and immediately be faced with hordes of secret service agents and police officers. The President was visiting a memorial right across the street from my hotel, and though I wouldn't exactly say I'm a fan of the man and his politics, I figured I might as well have a look at him. If nothing else, it'd be a good story to tell.
For most of the full hour I spent gazing into the park, George W. Bush was about the size of a mosquito. I could only tell it was him by the fact that he was shadowed by a mob of agents. Yet, I felt somewhat avenged by the fact that, when the President left, he passed right by the spot where I'd been chased by Polish cops and he (sigh) waved in my general direction.
Sad, yes, and the man is a moron...but I felt momentarily elated, as though the most powerful person in the world had just acknowledged my presence.
It only took a few seconds before I realised that I'm certainly in no need of his approval. All in all, though, it did turn into a pretty good story to tell.
As for Poland and Warsaw? Very nice. Pretty girls, good food, friendly people, and great, great weddings. Can't wait to go back.
